Doubtful Sound

Doubtful Sounds are located in the Fiordland National Park in the south of the South Island. It is a very rainy part of the country but we left with the sunshine.

Lords Of The Ring's fanatics will surely recognise this beautiful landscape.

The first part of the journey was going through Lake Manapouri.

At the other side of the Lake, we visited a hydro power station.
Manapouri is the largest hydro power station in New Zealand.

A Kea. They are the only perrots being able to live in the mountains. They are nasty birds that can rip your windscreen, steal your food...

It's an underground power station, with its generating units housed in a cavern excavated from rock 200 metres below the surface of Lake Manapouri.

No those are not silver. The silver fern is the symbole of New Zealand. They cannot grow in the fiordland. We'll show you some later.

The second part of the trip brought us in the Sound itself.
Doubtful Sound was named 'Doubtful Harbour' in 1770 by Captain Cook, who did not enter the inlet as he was uncertain whether it was navigable under sail.

Even though the weather was not nice, we really enjoyed the experience as it made the athmosphere really mystic. We almost had the feeling we were explorers discovering this place for the first time...

At the mouth of the fjord, fur seals like to rest.

Believe it or not, but this house in the middle of nowhere use to be a hotel.

The water running down the hills is very pure and good to drink.
